SkyPots is committed to minimizing our footprint on the environment. For this mission we chose sustainable materials during product development and we are now fulfilling orders in 100% plastic-free packaging. Most importantly, we designed SkyPots hanging kits to be reusable and durable enough to last through decades of gardening and rearrangements with different pots and plants.
- Sustainable materials:
- Stainless steel metal parts — Rods and nuts are made from SAE 304 stainless steel and chain is made from SAE 316 stainless steel. We could have incorporated regular steel into the design at a substantially lower cost but it would have put an unnecessary short life expectancy on the kits as they would quickly rust out after a couple years in wet gardening environments. We wanted SkyPots kits to be collectible and last through generations of arrangements without having to replace parts.
- Recycled post-consumer plastic — Flanges and Catch JR are made from 90% recycled post-consumer polypropylene. We learned a lot about plastic mold injection during product design. We needed to choose a base resin (plastic) early on because it effected the tool design. We searched for over a month to find a supplier of post-consumer resin that met our requirements since our California mold injectors did not have known suppliers. Surprisingly, even in California, producing plastic parts from post-consumer resin (from consumer recycle bins) is rarely requested! We ended up with parts made from 90% recycled plastics after adding a 10% mix of UV absorber (increases the life of the plastic) and metallic colorant. We're proud to say that SkyPots reduces the waste that reaches the landfill. Plus SkyPots helps you grow more plants which helps offset our carbon footprint!
- Plastic-free packaging
- We worked with a packaging manufacturer to develop a retail carton that was plastic-free to compliment our sustainability mission. Since SkyPots is a new gardening concept, the packaging still needed to inspire. We took this as a challenge to do without plastic.
- From tape to corrugated wrap padding, all orders fullfilled on SkyPots.com are shipped in 100% plastic-free secondary packaging.
