How it started
From DIY project to ready-to-assemble kits.
SkyPots hanging kits are an improved version of our original DIY project on The Horticult that was featured in Better Homes and Gardens magazine in 2016.
It involved drilling through plastic test plugs from the hardware store and cutting long threaded rods with a hack saw.
There had to be an easier way to hang and stack your everyday pots while still allowing the pots to drain.
Same look, much more versatile
A new connectable design
The original DIY version was not connectable. It was awkward to assemble and additional pots couldn't be added.
So we made prototypes of a connectable design with threaded rod and fasteners from the hardware store. We determined the best lengths for the rods that would work with standard sized pots.
In 2018, we choose the name "SkyPots" at a design conference in New York City.
PUTTING ENGINEERING SKILLS TO WORK
Bringing the concept to life
With the aide of a 3D printer, we designed the flanges and tested them in our garden. Through many iterations, we finally came up with a flange design that did not get clogged with soil when the plants are watered.
Based on the final design, we then developed a plastic injection mold with a manufacturer in Southern California in 2019.
We choose to make the polypropylene parts with 90% recycled plastic to meet the goals of our sustainability mission.
We designed the stainless steel hardware and imported them from an overseas manufacturer.
Our pot hanger kits are now patented!
